A FEW WORD FOR THE ISLAND

Zakynthos, which is known internationally as “Zante” or Flower of Levante (= Flower of the East) by the Venetians, is one of the Ionian Islands. It is the eleventh in size Greek island and the third (after Kefalonia and Corfu) and it is the second largest island of the Ionian complex. Its surface is 406 sq. km and the population amounts to 40.758 inhabitants (2011). Its distance from Peloponnese is 9.5 NM. miles (from Kyllini in the Prefecture of Ilia) and 8.5 NM. miles from the nearest island which is Kefalonia. “Yria”, is one of the ancient names of the island of Zakynthos.

The shape of Zakynthos is an irregular triangular with the northern edge ending at the cape Skinari, while the south-southeast forms the Laganas Bay between the two headlands, Marathi to the west and Gerakas, or Falcon, to the east. In the bay of Laganas there are three islands, Marathonisi, Agios Sostis and Pelouzo, while 37 nautical miles south of Laganas there are the islands Strofades. Laganas Bay, with its magnificent beach, has been declared National Park since 1999 as it is the nesting place for the endangered turtle Caretta-Caretta.
