FEW WORDS ABOUT THE PLACE

Piraeus is a city, part of the town complex of Athens and it is the most important port of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean. Piraeus includes the Municipality of Piraeus, which according to the census of 2011, has an area of 10.9 sq. km. and a population of 163.688 inhabitants, making it the fifth most populous municipality in the country after mergers of Kallikrates program.

The regional unity of Piraeus consists of the homonymous municipality and even four municipalities (Municipality Nice – St. Ioannis Rendi, Municipality of Korydallos, Municipality of Keratsini-Drapetsona, Municipality of Perama), with a total population of 448 997 inhabitants and an area of 50.4 square kilometers, and occupies the southwestern part of the capital region. The center of Piraeus is located about 10 km far from the center of Athens, constituting the latter’s historic seaport.

Piraeus in modern times is the most important industrial center of the country and the largest trading center of Greek economy, and has the largest (in passengers traffic) port in Europe, ferry connecting the capital with the Aegean islands and it costitutes an important destination for cruise ships within the Mediterranean.
